You start in The Backrooms with no direction, no instructions and very little assistance. As you explore further, though, you will find that there are cryptic puzzles that you must solve to continue... deeper.

The game will feature three massive, wild worlds known as Level 0, Level 1, and Level 2 filled with the internet lore about The Backrooms subject, including entities that you may have to fight your way through, run away from, or use to your advantage. Your purpose is to traverse through these three Levels using your camera to take important pictures and then no-clip back out of The Backrooms and return to "reality" alive and capturing the information you were sent to acquire on your camera. Your abilities are sprinting, jumping, pushing (including entities and walls) as well as having an inventory for holding and making use of certain things integral in solving certain puzzles. You are wearing a gas mask and will have to find replacement filters for that at some point. You have a camera, for proof, that you need to use to show to your team once you get out, if you get out. There are benefits and drawbacks to the camera - when you see something you don't believe can be real, you can take a digital picture and if the camera shows you something different and more fitting the surroundings than the picture you took, then your sanity meter will decrease. On the other hand, when you take a picture of something you see that might terrify you and the picture shows you the same exact thing, then your fear meter rises and it's time to run. Regardless you are required to use your camera throughout the game as the [REDACTED] team needs five good pictures of anomalies from each of the three rooms.

This is a first-person experience that has been designed to reveal what is behind the walls of the photograph that has become an internet sensation. It is dark, mysterious, dystopian, terrifying and insane. Take breaks and relax at points because "God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.”
