Early in the 21st century mankind broke out of Einstein's cage, with the developments of the Quantum Engine and the Jump Drive humanity gained the power to leap to our nearest star systems.
A small asteroid carrying a rare mineral called Neridium smashed into a small town in Oregon. despite the lose of life it was determined the unique properties of the mineral could lead to vast advances in reaction drives and even open the possibility of an FTL technology.
In 2062 over 300 unmanned jump probes were launched, dubbed Project Far Leap; they sought out stars and planets that humans could live on.
But disaster struck in 2093, when the long feared climate disaster came, greenhouse gasses had rendered the Mother World nearly uninhabitable, humanity pressed out into the solar system.
By 2129 humanity finally found the answer, known as Project Gaia, humanity tried to terraform the earth back into a habitable state. but it failed, when the mix of increased solar radiation and greenhouse gas combined with the special chemicals used to terraform it sparked a chain reaction in earth's atmosphere, plunging earth into a new ice age and creating the Barrier.
That event is now known as The Desolation. with humanity cut off from Mother Earth's resources the 13 million survivors were forced to dig in and try to continue humanity.
Then, like a shining star in the night sky, in 2179 a probe from the now mostly forgotten Far Leap project reported back, a habitable world had been found.
So the United Sol Confederation which sprung up after the UN fell in during the Desolation Initiated "Exodus". A plan to build 50 colony ships out of the remaining supplies and fill them with as many humans as could make the long voyage to that new home. of the almost 15 million they selected the best and brightest 130 thousand to crew the colony ships, then sent them out into the long night, leaving behind a barely alive humanity in search of a planet they called Nova
After a few decades of living on nova, humanity meets its first alien race, drawn by the translation flares and a human scout ship they become members of the larger galactic community. and during an attack by a major nation, humanity forms the Grand Alliance, a coalition of 4 major races; The Garn, Human union, Kalanarii Tech union, and the Tarri confederacy.
The GA fought against the Trandaki, and under the leadership of a human admiral, the combined forces of the GA beat the enemy and became a solid government instead of just a mutual defense pact.
you are retired soldier from a major war a few years back, one that united 5 races into a single coalition government, you left and used your back pay to buy a small merchant ship. after you got some wealth and made a name for yourself you overhear some fairly outlaw looking people at a bar about how some group is hiring all the pirate clans to disrupt the alliance. so you decide to get involved, you did just spend the last 20 years of your life fighting for this so you go and try to find some more about this before reporting the details to your friend who works for ONI, who then hires you to infiltrate the pirates, learn who is funding these attacks and try and stop the crisis these outlaws are causing that threatens the stability of your country
