Start out with tools that aren't so good and work up to much better weapons and tools. While you are out progressing, other players on your small island are out doing the same. Be friendly? Go ahead, but you can't always trust the desprate. Arm yourself with whatever you can make, make yourself a base, and be the best on the island.
